Teaching Kids Propane Safety

August 6, 2020

The new school year is upon us, which means kids are heading back to school to learn new things and expand their knowledge on subjects like math, science, and history. But something else that our children should be knowledgeable in is propane safety at home.

With over 60 million households utilizing propane in the U.S. and over a million children left home alone after school, it’s important to educate your kids on what propane gas is and how it’s being used in your home.

While propane is a safe way to meet energy needs, giving kids clear instructions on how to behave around propane equipment can avoid possible injury, property damage, and even fire.

Let’s go over some basic ABC’s about propane safety to teach your kids.

Always Know Where The Propane Tank Is Located.

Your children should know where the propane tank is and emphasize that they should not touch or play with or near the tank. They should also know that a propane tank should be stored indoors and should alert an adult if they notice any propane tanks stored inside.

Be Prepared. Make A Plan.

If a leak is present in the home, your kids need to exit the house immediately and find a trusted adult and call 911. Discus a meeting place beforehand, such as the neighborhood park or a friend’s house, as long as it’s in an area far enough from your house and the leak.

Can You Identify The Smell of Propane?

Teach your kids that propane smells like rotten eggs or a skunk so they will recognize when something is wrong. Let them know that if they smell propane, they should immediately find an adult to report the possible leak.

Remember educating your children about propane safety can save a life, and also give you a chance to have some fun with your kids. Nelson Propane is always dedicated to propane safety and is here for all your propane needs.
