Our Ultimate Hot Dog Grilling Guide

Is there anything more American than hot dogs and baseball? Now that America’s favorite past-time is in full swing, we thought we’d put together the ultimate grilling guide for a summertime classic.

During the dog days of summer, nothing beats a good ol’ fashioned hot dog and an ice cold beer. But hot dogs sometimes get bad rap for being too plain, so here’s how you can elevate your frank game and relish the season to become a hot dog grill master.

Buying Quality Franks

As with any great meal, it all starts with getting the right ingredients. Go all beef. When it comes to taste and grilling, all beef hot dogs perform best. Avoid any artificial colors or flavors. Hot dogs with natural ingredients always taste better and grill better than those that are enhanced with chemicals and additives.

Grilling Hot Dogs

The first step to grilling the perfect frank is to make sure your grill is ready to get cooking. Before you fire up the grill, spray the grates with a non-stick grill spray.

Preheat your grill before you throw the franks on. Remember, just like a well-seasoned athlete, your grill needs a proper warm-up to deliver its peak performance.

Using grill tongs, roll your franks over and grill each side of your frank to get the perfect sear marks, until the ends of the franks start to split. This can take between 5-8 minutes depending on your franks.

Toasting Your Buns

No one likes cold buns. Use a pastry brush to spread melted butter onto your hot dog bun. Place your bun face down on the grill and heat for 30 seconds. Make sure not to leave it too long or your bread will dry out.

Elevate Your Flavors

Sure, you can serve your franks with ketchup and mustard and call it a day. But why not reach higher? Here are extra toppings can try on your hot dog:

  • Chili

  • BBQ sauce

  • Sriracha

  • Mayonnaise

  • Salsa

  • Pico de Gallo

  • Nacho cheese

  • Jalepeños

  • Sour cream

  • Tzatziki

  • Shredded cheese

  • Relish

  • Pickle chips

  • Sauerkraut

  • Cole slaw

  • Potato chips

  • Tomatoes

  • Avocado

  • Caramelized onions

  • Cilantro

Check Your Propane

Don’t strike out! Before firing up the grill, make sure to check to see if you have enough propane. If not, visit our propane filling or exchange locations. Remember Nelson Propane is here to service all propane needs. Now, let’s play ball!
