Myth Busting Facts About Propane

I bet when ya’ll think of propane, the first thing that comes to mind is grilling. We don’t blame ya’ll. Propane grills can make some of the most delicious BBQ you’ve ever had! (We should know. We take our BBQ seriously in Texas. That’s a fact!)

But there’s so much more to propane than the white cylinder underneath your outdoor grill.

In fact, propane is quickly gaining in popularity as an energy source for many homes and businesses every year, but there’s still a lot of misinformation floating around. So we want to set the record straight once and for all, and bust these common myths with some truth.

Myth: Propane Is Dangerous

Wrong! Like any energy source, propane is perfectly safe if used with proper care. In fact, because federal, state, and local propane handling and use laws and codes are so strict, propane may actually be safer for home use than other forms of energy. Consider these propane safety facts:

  • Most propane equipment shuts off automatically if a problem develops.

  • Because of its rotten egg smell, a propane leak is easy to detect; if a propane leak does occur, the gas simply dissipates, leaving no mess or cleanup.

  • Propane has the lowest flammability rating of any alternative fuel.

  • Propane cylinders are equipped with a device that cuts off the filling process when the tank reaches 80 percent of its liquid capacity during a propane delivery – a safety measure designed to allow propane gas to expand harmlessly when a tank is in a hot environment (outside in the sun, for example).

  • Carbon steel propane tanks are 20 times more puncture resistant than tanks filled with ethanol, methanol or gasoline.

Myth: Propane Is Bad For Environment

Nope! When burned, propane has around half the carbon emissions of heating oil, and less than electricity produced by coal-fired plants. Propane is also nontoxic. In the rare event of a leak, propane does not harm water, soil, air, plants or aquatic life. Propane was named as an alternative fuel under both the 1990 update to the Clean Air Act and the 1992 National Energy Policy.

Myth: Propane Is Expensive

Not true! When you factor in total cost of propane equipment and services, propane is actually one of the most cost-effective energy sources out there. Propane burns cleaner, which means less wear and tear on equipment like your furnace, boiler and water heater. They need fewer repairs and have a longer lifespan. Throw in that today’s propane appliances can reach efficiencies as high as 98 percent, and you see why propane makes good fiscal sense!

Myth: Propane Is Only For Grilling

Guess again! It’s true that propane is ideal for grilling. It’s fast, easy and creates great results. But propane can do so much more both inside and outdoors. Here are some of the ways you can use propane and enhance the quality of your home or business.

  • Furnace or boiler

  • Tankless or storage water heater

  • Clothes dryer

  • Fireplace, fireplace insert, or log set

  • Cooking cooktop or range

  • Patio heater

  • Spa or pool heater

  • Outdoor fire pit

  • Outdoor gas lights

  • Outdoor kitchen grill

Myth: Propane Tanks Only Come In One Size.

False! Propane tanks do not come in a one size fits all option. They come in all shapes and sizes depending on your home or business needs. It’s common to see 20-lb, 33-lb, 100-lb, and 420-lb varieties. But there are also 500-gallon and 1,000-gallons as well.

Myth: Propane Is In Short Supply

Untrue! 90 percent of the United States' propane supply is produced right here at home. Because it is a byproduct of the petroleum refinement process, the means to produce and distribute propane are already available without the need for additional investments of time and money.

We hope we’ve cleared up some common misconceptions associated with propane for you. If you want to find out more of what propane can do or want to become a Nelson Propane customer, contact us today!
