Your Guide To Grilling The Perfect Thanksgiving Turkey

Thanksgiving is just a few short days away, which means the family is in town, the pies are prepped, the cranberry sauce is ready to be served, and the turkey is waiting to make its triumphant debut.

This year, instead of sticking to the traditional roasted turkey, why don’t you spice it up a bit and grill your turkey instead? It’s the perfect option for those who are tired of throwing the turkey in the oven, but not quite brave enough to attempt to deep fry one.

Grilling gives your turkey the perfect balance of crisp skin and moist succulent meat that will keep everyone coming back for seconds or even thirds!

  1. Pick The Right Size Turkey. Make sure that the bird you select fits on the grill. You need the lid to close entirely to cook properly. A 12 lb turkey or less works best on grills.

  2. Properly Thaw Your Bird. Like any other meat, you need to thaw your turkey. The thawing process can take several hours depending on the size of your turkey, so keep that in mind during your preparation.

  3. Check Your Propane Tank. The last thing you want is to have to run out of fuel while grilling your Thanksgiving turkey, so make sure you have ample fuel supply by calling Nelson Propane, or using one of our refill and exchange locations.

  4. Use Indirect Heat. You’ll want to prepare you outdoor grill for indirect medium-high heat and use a roasting pan. Make sure to keep the lid closed to conserve heat.

  5. Watch The Temperature. Your turkey should grill for 2 to 3 hours, but use a meat thermometer to check if it’s done. Ideally, the bird is ready when it's 180°F in the thigh and 165°F in breast.

  • 12 pounds whole turkey

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

  • salt and pepper to taste

  1. Prepare an outdoor grill for indirect medium-high heat.

  2. Rinse turkey and pat dry. Turn wings back to hold neck skin in place. Return legs to tucked position. Brush turkey with oil. Season inside and out with Italian seasonings, salt, and pepper.

  3. Place turkey, breast side up, on a metal grate inside a large roasting pan. Arrange pan on the prepared grill. Grill 2 to 3 hours, to an internal thigh temperature of 180 degrees F (85 degrees C). Remove turkey from grill and let stand 15 minutes before carving.
